Barcelona bans the opening of new CBD stores

Recently, Barcelona has decided to impose a ban on the opening of new shops selling CBD products in the central Ciutat Vella district. This decision, which came into effect on July 1, 2024, has been created in response to complaints from local merchants about an oversaturation of CBD shops in tourist-dense areas. The ban, which will initially be in effect for one year, can be extended if necessary and is part of a broader strategy to protect and diversify the local economy.

The decision has been taken by the city council under the leadership of Mayor Jaume Collboni, and it aims to create a more balanced trading environment. In recent years, the number of shops selling CBD products has increased significantly in Barcelona. These shops have become particularly popular with tourists, leading to concerns among local businesses about a distortion of the local market.

A spokesman for City Hall stated that it wants to avoid a situation where certain areas become oversaturated with one type of business, which could drive away other types of business and reduce the overall attractiveness and diversity of the city’s shopping offer. This measure is seen as a way to promote more sustainable and varied economic growth in the city.

For the existing stores, the decision means that they can continue their operations, but no new licenses will be issued until the ban is reviewed. It remains to be seen how this policy will affect the city’s CBD market in the long term.

What is CBD?

Cannabidiol (CBD) is a cannabinoid found naturally in the cannabis plant. Unlike tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), CBD is non-psychoactive, meaning it doesn’t give a feeling of being high. CBD is often used in medical and wellness contexts to manage pain, anxiety, inflammation, and certain types of epilepsy. It is available in various forms, including oils, capsules, creams, and food products.
