This year on the 24th of May marks a significant milestone for Finland’s Hemp March (Hamppumarssi), celebrating 25 years of protests advocating for the end of cannabis prohibition and the restoration of human rights. As one of the country’s longest-standing demonstrations for cannabis reform, the event has grown into a powerful platform for raising awareness and challenging outdated policies.
The Hemp March has been traditionally held in Turku, organized by groups like Vihreät Pantterit ry (The Green Panthers) and the Turku Cannabis Association. In recent years, the Hamppupuolue (Hemp Party) has taken over the event’s coordination, injecting new resources while maintaining its grassroots spirit. The march typically begins with a gathering at Puolalanmäki, followed by a procession through the city with stops for speeches, music, and cultural activities.
One of the event’s unique highlights is the Finnish Championships in Joint Rolling, introduced in 2019. Participants compete to craft the most beautiful and functional joint, adding a lighthearted yet impactful element to the cause.
With this year’s demonstration coinciding with the deadline for registering the Hemp Party, the stakes are higher than ever. Supporters are encouraged to bring friends and amplify the call for reform, ensuring this tradition can continue for as long as it’s needed.
The Finnish Hemp March is more than a protest—it’s a celebration of progress, a call for justice, and a testament to the resilience of its advocates. As it enters its 25th year, it remains a beacon of hope for a greener and more equitable future.
