Germany: President of pharmacy association wants to sell cannabis over-the-counter

The president of the Pharmacists’ Association in German North Rhine, Thomas Preis, supports cannabis being sold without a prescription in pharmacies. This proposal is made with the intention of ensuring that patients have access to medically approved cannabis products, without having to rely on unreliable sources.

Germany legalizes cannabis

Since cannabis was legalized in Germany on April 1 this year, Preis argues that it would be an easy step for lawmakers to allow the sale of cannabis without a prescription in pharmacies for self-medication in certain conditions. This change would give patients the ability to manage their illnesses more independently.

Given the change in the law, Preis suggests that pharmacies could distribute small amounts of cannabis for medical purposes under strict conditions, even without a prescription. By making pharmacies primary dispensaries, Preis believes that patients can obtain high-quality and safe products.

Continued prescription requirement and its consequences

Currently, prescriptions are still required to buy cannabis in German pharmacies, despite the legalization of the use of cannabis for recreational purposes. Preis emphasizes the role of pharmacies as a safe place for cannabis acquisition, protecting patients and their health.

The importance of professional advice in healthcare

He also emphasizes the importance of professional advice in health care regarding the use of cannabis. He explains that inhaling with a vaporizer or using cannabis tincture is much less harmful than smoking a joint. Furthermore, he advises everyone to consult a doctor. Which might not happen if patients self-medicated with home-grown cannabis, and it bought from cannabis clubs or on the black market.

However, Preis is clear that the pharmacies will not function as sales outlets for recreational cannabis or as pure cannabis shops. This proposal from the North Rhine Pharmacists’ Association marks a significant step in the discussion on cannabis use and distribution in Germany, and could potentially lead to greater accessibility and safety for patients seeking medical cannabis products.
