A recent online survey conducted by Research Co. provides insights into Canadians’ attitudes toward cannabis legalization and their purchasing habits. In this national poll, 62% of Canadians expressed support for the continued legality of cannabis in the country, showing only a slight decrease (-2%) from a similar survey conducted in October 2023. Meanwhile, 33% of respondents disagreed with legalization, and 4% remained undecided, highlighting a generally favorable but somewhat divided perspective.
The survey also shed light on where Canadians are purchasing cannabis. Among those who have used cannabis since its legalization in October 2018, 51% reported acquiring all their products from licensed retailers. However, a significant 40% acknowledged obtaining “most,” “some,” or even “none” of their cannabis from licensed sources, suggesting that a portion of the cannabis market still relies on non-regulated sources. This trend underscores the ongoing challenges in shifting all consumers to legal channels, where products are subject to quality and safety standards.
As Canada’s cannabis industry matures, these insights emphasize the importance of accessibility, pricing, and public awareness in supporting a fully regulated market.
